- Each of the memes that I’ve shared with you share one thing in common–they are related to music in some form. My blog’s topic is about anything and everything music-related. Music has the power to enhance a scene’s mood or simply change the context in a different light. Furthermore, these memes showcase how music plays a role in each of our lives while poking light fun at different aspects of this role. My target audience ranges from the age of 15-25 so I believe that sharing these memes will allow my readers to connect to the material even more than ever before.
- According to Davison, the ‘ideal’ of a meme is the idea conveyed (p. 123). The ideal dictates the behavior, which then creates the manifestation (p. 123). The ideal of the first meme is that “unfitting music is funny.” The ideal of the second meme is something like “music videos without music are awkward but funny.” The ideal of the third meme is that “music taste is subjective but it’s hilarious to poke fun at other people’s music taste.”
- The ‘behavior’ of a meme is the action an individual takes for the meme (Davison, p. 123). The first meme’s behavior is editing an already existing video scene with a different sound that is “unfitting.” This meme originated from a video that circulated in 2007 where the character Luigi is seen winding a toy while unfitting music plays in the background (Know Your Meme). The video inspired a series of similar videos using various labels as soundtrack dissonance was being used as a trope—adding an additional layer of meaning causes a viewer to think about the subject matter (Know Your Meme). For the second meme, the behavior is using the original sound from the shots used in a music video. This meme originated from Michael Jackson’s music video for his hit song “Beat It” and it spread through CollegeHumor, which ended up uploading other music videos without the musical track playing (Know Your Meme). Finally, the third meme’s behavior is that a memorable quote from a well-known show is being highlighted in a second-long video. This meme originated from the Futurama episode titled “The Devil’s Hands are Idle Playthings” where Zoidberg criticizes Fry’s performance by saying the phrase “Your music’s bad and you should feel bad!” (Know Your Meme). The meme then continued to spread with different variations on IGN forums (Know Your Meme).
- A ‘manifestation’ of a meme is its observable, external phenomena according to Davison (p. 123). In other words, it is the set of objects created by the meme. Each of the memes that I’ve shared all have manifestations of their own. All of the memes have spread on the internet with their own variations and twists to the memes as different individuals made the meme their own. For example, the second meme I shared caused a surge of more music videos without its musical track to be uploaded onto YouTube. The first meme sparked a number of videos to be edited with unfitting music and then uploaded onto the web. Lastly, the third meme has different versions all over IGN forums.
- These specific manifestations I have chosen appeal to my target audience since they are typically younger with ages ranging from 15 to 25. I believe that my content is trending enough to still be relatable. Humorous posts and memes attract younger readers and that’s why I think my target audience would like this content along with my original content.
